My memory tells me that when I was a child, I, along with my cousins and brothers, would get all dressed up on New Year’s Eve. There were times when we would join our parents and older relatives in hearing mass. But most often than not, we would stay home and eat dinner early so that we could all get out in the yard and look expectantly at the night sky for the first sign of fireworks. This was how we welcomed the New Year when I was young. Years later, I would say that nothing much has changed. Although we are usually busily engaged in different kinds of activities for most of the night, you would still find us grouped outside the house and lighting up fireworks in joy when the clock strikes twelve. Despite being told several times of the danger of using such products, we do not mind because for years, they have been material in bringing us together even only for a couple of minutes.
